Astrological Impact of New Moon in Cancer 2026 - The Barbault Basket of Bloom or Doom?

Every month, the Sun and Moon meet up to mark the start of a new lunar cycle.  On 14th July 2026 10:44 BST/17:44 HKT, we have a New Moon in Cancer.  Besides being ruled by a dignified moon (obviously),  this new moon is very special in that it contains the Barbault Basket - an astrological configuration named after the French astrologer AndrĂ© Barbault.  I'm no expert on this rare configuration, which becomes exact 5 days after this new moon,  but it apparently indicates the start of a new Golden Age (not right away,  I guess, these things take time to build up....)

How does this tie-in with the New Moon in Cancer?

Globally, many astrologers predict some major changes on the way.  Incidentally, England will get a new Prime Minister on 20th July 2026, which definitely will herald a new political start.   As we speak, we are in the middle of a global event - FIFA World Cup.  Besides predictions and team news,  social media is acting as a conduit pulling supporters together, where fans find their clans online. It's like one big family!   I have also come across discussions on the race, nationality and birth places of players.  How some players are eligible to represent more than one country, but they made their decisions due to their strong sense of belonging to their native land.  All very Cancerian.

Under this New Moon in Cancer, it is a good time to crawl into your shell if you fancy some me time, which goes nicely with Mercury retrograde also in Cancer as you can introspect or simply vegetate.  A new start regarding the home, family, house, land may crop up.  You could also contemplate a new plan to manage your emotions, if your mood swings and sensitive nature affect how you relate to others.

Bloom or Doom on a Personal Level?

The Barbault Basket involves a Jupiter-Pluto opposition, with Jupiter sextile Uranus at one end and Pluto sextile Neptune at the other, and then Uranus and Neptune connects the final gap with a sextile.  To 'secure' the basket further, we have Jupiter trine Neptune and Pluto trine Uranus (see picture below).

The Barbault Basket

Jupiter in an opposition can be too much of a good thing.  With Pluto tugging hard at the other end, watch out for the tendency to be sucked into a power play where your blind faith, arrogance and over optimism can stop you from releasing out-dated beliefs, hindering transformation to take place.  Luckily, the sextiles and trines to Neptune and Uranus provide opportunities and natural insight to seize the chance to break out of the current constrain and become something greater, especially if it benefits the masses instead of just yourself.  Neptune reminds us of being compassionate and Uranus to be innovative and not to be afraid to try something new.  If your chart has planets at 4 degrees, you have direct access to this configuration.

The Barbault Basket shows that life is not simply black or white, just like the yin yang symbol:  there's white in black and black in white. We have the freewill and ability to use this to catapult us to higher grounds, or we can stay in the comfort of our existing cocoon and refuse to take any chances.

The decision is yours.

New Moon in Cancer 2015

Do you feel like an outcast, a misfit? An alien from another planet, an orphan in your family?

These are all very Aquarian in nature, but what ensues is not feeling part of a work team or family unit. This lack of a sense of belonging is related to the sign of Cancer.

One common denominator I've noticed with Cancer strong in the chart (eg. Sun/Ascendant/stellium in Cancer) is the theme of belonging. For example, the native has no trust in the homeland and is seeking refuge elsewhere (Cancer is one's roots, including birth country), or s/he has no affinity within one's own family unit and wants to lead a carefree life as a globetrotter or a recluse, moving away from the rest of the clan. They don't feel they belong to their original family unit so they seek their place elsewhere.  It's their way of hiding in their crab shell.

Under this month's new moon in Cancer (at 23 degrees 14 minutes on 16th July), portraying the beginning of a cycle, perhaps it's worth addressing this theme, especially with Pluto tightly oppose Mercury and Mars in Cancer. We can take an active part in releasing some old thought patterns that are stopping us from enjoying the nourishing flow of love into our bodies.

Everyone has a rightful place in their original family. You are irreplaceable.

Don't Shoot the Messenger!

As we approach the New Moon in Cancer on Friday, coupled with Mercury retrograding Gemini (Cancer in the first half of the cycle), we are likely to be dealing with stirred up emotions with their roots in childhood.

Instead of feeling sorry for yourself and directing anger at the perpetrator or 'messenger', understand that if pain wasn't within you in the first place, then no external person or event could have triggered the negative reaction in you.  Thank the person for facilitating the process of pushing this subconscious issue (Cancer) into your conscious mind for analysis (Gemini).

Assess Your Internal Dialogue

On the theme of digging into your emotional past (New Moon in Cancer 2014: http://cosmicpotential.blogspot.hk/2014/06/new-moon-in-cancer-2014.html), why not assess your internal dialogue and discover what beliefs are currently reverberating in your mind?

For example, perhaps you have picked up the notion that 'money is hard to come by', or 'no pain no gain', so you wonder why your colleague can get away with murder while you work your socks off but get the same reward as that lazy so-and-so.

'Positive affirmations don't work.  I've tried them.'

This is likely to be because consciously, you are uttering the positive statements, but subconsciously, you're thinking of the opposite.

Our thoughts create our reality. Perhaps it is time to make some alterations and re-adjust those outdated (subconscious) thoughts.

I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self-esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

I believe forgiveness is the key to your unhappiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed
I believe that God does not endorse TV evangelists
I believe in love surviving death into eternity

I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love until you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye

New Moon in Cancer 2014

On 27th June at 9:08am (BST), we have a  new moon which takes place at 5 degrees 37 minutes in the nurturing sign of Cancer.

New Moon marks the beginning of a new cycle, where seeds of intention can be sown on fertile soil.

Under the sign of Cancer, representing the mother archetype, it is a great time to explore our subconscious mind, to identify habits and patterns formed during childhood which might be preventing us from moving forward in adulthood.  The cardinal T-square (Mars-Uranus opposition both square Pluto) could reflect impulsive actions that are fear-driven.  Or we could do something different (Uranus) and face our fears (Pluto) boldly (Mars).  It could turn out to be quite a healing experience (New Moon trine Neptune in Pisces).

Check the house in which this new moon lands in your chart.  Do you have planets, angles, points between 4 degrees 37 minutes to 6 degrees 37 minutes in cardinal signs (Cancer, Capricorn, Aries, Libra)?

New Moon in Cancer 2013

The New Moon in Cancer on 8th July at 16 degrees 18 minutes presents us with our monthly opportunity to reset our intentions.

Ruled by the moon, Cancer is associated with our home, family (mother in particular), our feelings and emotions, our past traumas and emotional security.

Under this new Moon, we also have Jupiter in Cancer, thus expanding the emotional issues at hand.  In addition, we have Jupiter as part of a grand water trine with Saturn and Neptune, giving us a chance to manifest our dreams.  However, with 3 free flowing trines, there is a danger of just thinking and no action.  This may not be a bad thing since we also have Mercury in retrograde in Cancer so introspection is the key.  Use this time to research, revise, and reconsider.  Jupiter conjunct Mars in Gemini could provide the action we are seeking though it could end up as verbal frustration.

As Mercury is closely conjunct this Cancer new moon, this is a time to make sense of our inner vulnerabilities - not just feeling it as an emotion (Moon) but also to attempt to think and verbalise it (Mercury).  I would personally use the mode of writing instead of speaking though.  With Mercury in retrograde, an element of misunderstanding may creep in when confiding in someone of our vulnerabilities and traumas.

Lastly, we have this new moon locked in a T-Square with Uranus and Pluto.  Sense of insecurity triggered by external events.

Where does this new moon fall in your natal chart?
